Syphilis
Syphilis is a disease caused by bacteria.
Symptoms
The first phase, 2-12 weeks after infection:
- One or more painless ulcers in the vagina, mouth or anus. Sometimes the ulcers are difficult to notice because they are inside the vagina or rectum.
- Swollen (lymph) glands in the neck or groin.
Second phase, 12 weeks after infection:
- A rash over the entire body, especially on the palms and the soles of the feet.
- Symptoms similar to flu: headache, sore throat, tiredness, fever.
- Loss of hair, bald patches appearing.
- Wart-like lumps around the genitals.
Third phase, years after infection:
Untreated syphilis causes ulcers on the skin, complications with organ function, partial paralysis and damage to the central nervous system.
Diagnosis
Syphilis is diagnosed through a blood test. It can be identified around two months after infection.
Treatment
Syphilis is treated with antibiotics. It is important to go for a check-up after finishing the course of antibiotics, to be sure that the infection has completely left the body. Under no circumstances should the treatment be interrupted.
